Appellate Paralegal (DFM #777)

Growing, international law firm in Uptown is seeking an Appellate Paralegal to join their growing firm!  Position requires high attention to detail and able to conduct legal research, document management, and able to read and summarize case law and depositions.  Tasks range from reviewing files in preparation for the appeal to putting together mandamus records and appendices to briefs.

 

Essential Duties

-Update and circulate the appellate docket; schedule and participate in weekly docket meetings.

-Understand and follow the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure.

-Stay up-to-date on all amendments or revisions to the Texas and Federal Rules of Appellate and Civil Procedure.

-Assist with preparation and cite checking of motions for judgment once a verdict is reached in the trial court.

-Prepare appellate timetables and calendar appointments as developments occur.

-Prepare initial drafts of documents (e.g., notice of appeal, motions, shells for briefs).

-Cite check briefs.

-Run the TOC and TOA in briefs prior to filing.

-Hyperlink cites in the brief to appendix items.

-Handle appellate and litigation e-filings.

-Assist with preparation for oral argument, hearings, and trial.

-Conduct legal research.

Other Duties

-Monitor the courts of appeals and Supreme Court opinions.

-Stay up-to-date on all changes to court’s e-filing requirements.

-Work with outside vendors, as needed.

-Might handle bonds (e.g., supersedeas, TRO, etc.)

-Assist secretaries with filings and other projects as needed.

 

Qualifications

   Knowledge/Experience

-Paralegal should have at least 5+ years experience in appellate law and procedures across courts.

-Must be familiar with effective administrative processes and proper cite form (Texas Green Book and Blue Book form).

-Should have administrative experience related to the legal services environment.

   Skills

-Must possess above-average writing skills and able to conduct legal research and translate difficult concepts into simple terms.

-Must possess the ability to manage a multitude of tasks and cases simultaneously.

-Excellent computer proficiency, be a self-starter and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

   Education

-Paralegal certification form an ABA approved school or Bachelor’s degree in a field related to law, administration or liberal arts required.

Salary:  $75,000-85,000 DOE
